In this article, we delve into the fascinating characteristics of Ficus palmata and uncover the allure it holds which has captivated botanists, horticulturists, and fig enthusiasts alike.
Those little figs look ... little. What is their size. So this is a sexual and asexual fig, as far as propogation? How does it spread in nature? Those little seeds get planted by small animal manure?
Yes, they are a little smaller than common ficus carica figs. A little smaller than a golf ball. Fig trees are either male or female. Female fig trees produce edible figs. Male fig trees have figs with pollen inside that are not juicy like female figs. There is a fig wasps that pollinates the figs, and in the wild that is how they get pollinated. Then, birds and other critters eat the figs and poop out their seeds, which is how they spread in nature. I am growing many fig trees from seed in addition to growing them from cuttings. I germinate seeds from dried figs. I have seedlings that I germinated from dried figs from Greece, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and China. The figs in Iran and Afghanistan and China are a different species called Ficus Afghanistanica. They are even smaller than Ficus Palmata figs. Around the size of a cherry. This is what they look like dried. https://persianbasket.com/certified-organic-dried-figs-estahban-of-iran.html My next article is going to be about Ficus Afghanistanica. Several of the fig trees I grew from seed currently have figs on them, and I am waiting for them to become ripe (about 2-3 more weeks) so I can take picture of them before writing the article.
Lovely Fig! I had a fig tree from Iran, in my backyard, that tree grew the biggest and most delicious figs..

Those "little smaller than a golf ball" sized figs are the same size I get now.
Thank you for the interesting information. I think figs in the US are only propogated through cuttings and are all female.
